Power Rangers YouTube Thumbnail

Overview

Last year, a client approached me to create a YouTube thumbnail as a gift for someone who makes Power Rangers skits. It seemed simple at first, so I accepted the project. However, with 12 characters to fit into the composition, it turned into a bit of a challenge. The layout was the trickiest part, as I tried out different arrangements until I found one that looked just right. When I sat down to sketch, I decided to unify the diverse color palette by making all the tones cooler, which really helped bring harmony to the final piece.

Involvement

References and Sketches

Each character was drawn separately, full-body, allowing flexibility to adjust the layout if needed. This approach also gave the client the option to use individual character illustrations with voice-overs to highlight who was speaking in the video.

While I had creative freedom, the client provided a clear concept and outline, which I followed closely, adding my own tweaks to enhance the colors and make the design pop. The characters were created on A3 300 DPI canvases, making them suitable for printing on merchandise like T-shirts or for other future uses. Since Power Ranger suits can look flat and plasticky, I added muscle toning to give the suits dimension and a more polished look—though, admittedly, the suits were always a bit plasticky even in the original show.

Background Design

For the background, I wanted to avoid the empty look of the reference image the client sent. Sticking with a galaxy theme as in the reference, I designed two background options, each with colors representing the various Rangers. Ultimately, both backgrounds helped to complete the final piece, adding depth and complementing the characters’ colors.

Woahhh that’s awesome!!!! 👏🏽👏🏽 You did fantastic and ima keep in contact with you! I Preciate everything you have done
